We have introduced a new appointment system to make it easier for patients to speak with a GP.  Appointments are available up to 7 days in advance.  When you ring for an appointment, our receptionists are trained to ask what the problem is, as this helps direct your problem to the correct clinician or service.  Appointments will be made available throughout the day.

Every Monday evening we offer extended hours appointments at the Yarnspinners surgery up until 8.15pm – some will be released 7 days in advance, with the remainder released on the day from 8am. Appointments to see a GP or nurse are available at both surgeries. We also have some appointments available on Monday evenings at our Yarnspinners surgery - ask reception for more details.

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to book appointments with your preferred GP but this is not always possible as all the GPs work at both practices.  We recommend that you try and see the same GP for follow-ups of particular health issues as this will improve your 'continuity of care', for example if you see the same GP for your blood pressure they will be more likely to know what you have previously discussed without having to read your medical notes.  Please note that we are a group practice and that the first appointment available may not be with the doctor or nurse of your choice. Please book a separate appointment for each problem.   If you need to speak about more than one problem, please telephone reception and specifically ask for a longer appointment slot. Appointments are for 10 minutes only.

There may be times when the doctors or nurses may be running behind.  This can be due to a number of reasons, including medical emergencies which may impact on a clinicians running time. Appointments will not be available during these hours. Please note one appointment slot is for one person.  When booking an appointment each patient is given an allocated time.  This time is to allow an appropriate consultation length of time for one person.

If more than one person in your family needs to be seen by a GP you must make a separate appointment.  Please do not ask the doctor to see an extra patient who does not have an appointment.  It is not fair on other patients who have made their appointments and not on the doctor whose surgery then runs late.

If you have a problem that you feel could be dealt with over the telephone then please ask the receptionist to book a telephone appointment for you.  For example, sick notes, medication queries/reviews, results and general advice can be dealt with via a telephone call from your GP.

Cancelling Your Appointment

You can cancel appointments by telephoning or calling in at the reception desk, or by using Patient Access. We have a text messaging service available whereby you can cancel appointments via mobile phone. Please text 07751225476 to cancel your appointment.  Please note, this is only for appointment cancellations.  All other requests should be via a phone call or reception staff.

Practice Nurses

Our practice nurses are available by appointment for various treatments, health promotion advice and screening, including smears, immunisations and vaccinations, heart and blood pressure checks, asthma care, diabetes care, travel advice and immunisations, family planning and well person health checks.

The nurses are qualified to advise and treat many minor conditions and it may prove quicker to see a practice nurse than wait for a consultation with your doctor, who is always available if you have any cause for concern.
When booking an appointment with a nurse practitioner or a practice nurse, our reception staff may need to ask you the reason for an appointment in order to determine how much time to allocate. Consultations are by appointment.

Health Care Assistants

Our healthcare assistants are not qualified nurses, but have undergone training to enable them to take bloods, blood pressure, assist with minor surgery, new patient health checks that do not involve medication and do ECGs.  All requests for blood tests must be made through one of the doctors, nurse practitioner
or practice nurses.

Please note Nurse and HCA appointments cannot be booked via Patient Access.  Please speak to a receptionist who will be happy to help.

Patient Access is a brilliant tool for booking appointments, ordering prescriptions and much more.

  • You can now book appointments online via Patient Access each day from 7am and 7pm!
  • Appointments are available to book 7 days in advance.
  • We hope that by implementing these new appointment release times, we improve access to appointments for all.

To book appointments online or via the mobile app, please ask a receptionist for your Patient Access.  You can also order repeat prescriptions and send secure messages to reception using this service.  Once you have registered for online Patient Access, use the link below to access the online booking service.

Using Your Clinician's Time Effectively

You can help us to help you by using appointments effectively.  GP appointments are booked in 10 minute slots. If you feel you have a number of issues or more complex issues to discuss, please request a longer appointment when booking with a receptionist.

Making a list of the questions you would like to ask is a good way of making sure that you get the most out of the appointment.  Please do not save up many problems for a single consultation as this can lead to the surgery over-running and delays for subsequent patients. The GP may not be able to answer all your questions at one appointment.

If you are seeing a nurse or health care professional, it may be a good idea to wear loose fitting clothing or short sleeves depending on the nature of your appointment, for example if you are having a blood test or blood pressure reading. It is also helpful if the area of your body to be examined is clean and easily accessible.

We have a blood pressure monitor available at the Yarnspinners surgery where you can take your own blood pressure reading prior to an appointment, and take the result in to the doctor or nurse with you.  It is situated in the reception waiting area behind the blue screen.

Booking In

When you arrive for your appointment, please check into reception so that the Doctor or nurse knows that you are here.  At our Yarnspinners surgery you can check yourself in using our touchscreen self-check in system in the waiting room or see staff at the reception. Please speak with reception if you have been waiting more than 30 minutes.

We understand at times you may need to cancel an appointment if something changes in your schedule.  If you are unable to keep your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can allocate it to someone else.  You can even cancel your appointment by texting 07751225476.  Our practice mobile is always manned and we will cancel your appointment straightaway.  We are thankful to all patients that cancel appointments as we can offer valuable appointments to someone who needs it.

DID NOT ATTENDS

Non-attendance at a booked appointment contributes towards long waiting times.  92 patients did not attend their appointments with us during January 17.  This equals 1380 minutes / 23 hours of clinician’s time which could have been used for other patients.

How you can help other patients and help reduce our waiting times:

  • Please ring us to cancel the appointment if you no longer need it - 01282 657575
  • Or text us to cancel your appointment! – 07751225476

We recognise that some illnesses improve with time, without treatment, but please do cancel your appointment should you find you no longer need it.

Think before you book your appointment - is it something you can manage without our help?  There are some good self-help links on ReedyfordGP.com, and free self-help information is available at our reception desk.

As home visits are for those patients too ill to attend surgery, please only request a home visit if you (or the person you are calling on behalf of) is too ill or frail to attend the practice.  When requesting a visit, our receptionists will take some details such as the nature of the problem, and request a phone call from a doctor who will discuss your problem, and arrange the home visit.

Please remember the doctor can see four patients in the time it takes to make one house call.  The doctor may arrange for the patient to be brought to the surgery so that its full facilities are available for tests and treatment.  It is not possible to request a specific doctor for a home visit.

Taxi / HGV / PCV / Insurance Medicals etc

If you require an appointment for any kind of medical, please book your appointment in person at Nelson or Barrowford reception.  We require a £10 deposit to secure your appointment.  The balance will be due on completion of your medical with the doctor.
